Yang’s Fried Dumplings

Talk about diamond in the rough.

And we have a friend to thank for introducing us to Yang’s Fried Dumplings, right in the heart of Shanghai. The location is just off 人民广场 or People’s Square, in the Nanjing Lu area.

At 5元, for 4 pieces, how can you go wrong?

Think of a xiao long bao, but the outer covering is like a very thin siopao (mantou) dough. Then the bottom is fried. Killer!
Here’s how they look like when served.
Remember, they’re VERY hot, so here’s the way it’s recommended that you eat them — choose one dumpling, and poke a hole in it.
S-l-o-w-l-y drink the HOT (I cannot reiterate this enough) soup inside.
Then eat the rest of the dumpling!
Happiness!
They have black vinegar too, with some pepper and other spice bottle, and chili. Try that, yuuuuummmm!!

Oh, you can get drinks from the convenience store beside it. Be sure to try green tea Sprite. It’s something that’s not available here at all!

The Best Meal we had in that part of 中国

…was along this night market street.

Of course, before everything else, we *had* to have 奶茶, which is certainly creamier than what we get in Manila!

We joined the (seemingly) millions of Chinese (well, maybe a few hundreds only. It just felt like there were so many of them! Imagine Megamall on a Sunday!) shopping and eating. Here were our finds.
We stopped at this shawarma place (of course, I realize now that the shawarma can’t be seen. Olats.) which had chicken shawarma, Chinese style. The roll had cabbage, and the wrap was different…not as thick and it went around several times.

This is what was left of it because I forgot to take a picture. We were starving.

Right beside that, there was a lady who made noodles (we skipped her) and one who grilled veggies and meat. AMAZING!

We got eggplant (I’m tempted to say aubergines because they look sooooo good!), fresh shitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, chicken, mutton. Ay, ang sarap.
Here are the happy campers.

Somewhere along the way, we found this scallion pancake. There are no words to describe how good!! This picture does no justice.

There were candied fruits too, but we didn’t try them. They looked so pretty so I had to take a picture!

Certainly one night to remember!!
